How to care for a Hamster
Hamster Care Guide
1. Housing
Hamsters should be kept in a properly sized cage (at least 30x45 cm) with areas for exercise such as a running wheel or tunnels. Line the cage with odor-free wood shavings or paper-based bedding. Place the enclosure in a quiet, dry location away from direct sunlight and drafts.
2. Suitable Diet
A balanced diet includes mixed seeds, hamster-specific pellets, and fresh vegetables like carrots, cucumber, or boiled corn. Occasionally offer fruits like apple or banana as treats. Avoid sugary, salty, or fatty foods. Always provide fresh, clean water.
3. Health Care
Hamsters are generally clean animals, but their cage bedding should be replaced weekly and accessories cleaned regularly. Watch for unusual signs such as appetite loss, fur shedding, or wobbly walking. Seek veterinary care if symptoms occur.
4. Bonding and Interaction
Build trust gradually by hand-feeding and speaking softly. Avoid grabbing from above, which may startle them. Instead, scoop them gently from below and handle during their active hours, typically in the evening.
