How to care for a Spotted Dove
Spotted Dove Care Guide
1. Housing
Spotted Doves are calm and solitary birds that prefer peaceful surroundings. They thrive in large cages or outdoor aviaries with trees, perches, and access to drinking and bathing water. The enclosure should be well-ventilated and placed away from direct sun and strong wind.
2. Suitable Diet
Their diet mainly consists of grains such as paddy rice, sorghum, cracked corn, and millet. Supplement with fresh greens and provide calcium sources like cuttlebone. Fresh, clean water should be available at all times.
3. Health Care
Spotted Doves are generally healthy birds, but they still require good hygiene. Clean the cage regularly and replace food and water daily. Watch for signs like puffed feathers, lethargy, or labored breathing. Seek veterinary attention if symptoms occur.
4. Bonding and Interaction
While not typically fond of direct contact, Spotted Doves can become familiar with humans through calm speech and regular hand-feeding. Avoid sudden movements or loud noises. They should be housed in pairs or groups within a spacious environment that allows them to express natural behaviors such as perching, cooing, and bathing comfortably.
