How to care for a Finch
Finch Care Guide
1. Housing
Finches are small birds that require ample horizontal space to fly. Choose a wide cage (minimum 60x40x40 cm for a pair) with multiple perches, clean food and water dishes, and absorbent bedding. The cage should be placed in a calm, well-ventilated area away from loud noises and direct sunlight.
2. Suitable Diet
Finches primarily eat seeds such as millet, sorghum, and oats. Their diet should be supplemented with leafy greens (e.g., spinach) and small portions of fresh fruits like apples or grated carrots. Finch-specific pellets can be used as a dietary supplement. Provide a source of calcium like cuttlebone or mineral blocks.
3. Health Care
Finches are relatively low-maintenance but require daily cleaning of water and food dishes, and weekly cage cleaning. Monitor for unusual behaviors such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or fluffed-up feathers, which could indicate illness.
4. Bonding and Interaction
Though finches are not typically hand-tamed like parrots, they are social birds that thrive in pairs or groups. Owners can build trust through gentle talking and providing toys. Housing them with companions prevents loneliness and stress.
